Fantasy Baseball Preview | 3B
Wednesday, April 18th, 2012Happy Wednesday to all you fantasy fans,
The hot corner is a loaded position this year, so finding yourself a rock solid player for your fantasy baseball team is crucial. Don’t draft strictly based on name value, as there are some top tier players who will let down their fantasy baseball salary cap owners more often than not this season.
1. Miguel Cabrera – He is eligible at 1B, but is even more valuable at the other corner. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say we could be looking at the 2012 batting champ and the home run champ. Few players have the balance Miggy does, and with the addition of Prince Fielder, opposing pitchers can’t avoid Cabrera. He should be viewed as the top player overall in all formats, including our fantasy baseball pick’em game. There will be weeks were he dominates, but even a down week for the Tigers third basemen will land him in the top 5 at his position.
2. Evan Longoria – His average will bounce back, making him elite once again. He hit a mere .244 last year, a number that doesn’t indicate the skill set of this stud. “Evan Almighty” will be a headline at some point this year, and you want to be along for the ride. The lineup will hit its stride when BJ Upton returns (expected to be back within a week), with Longoria in the midst of it all. He’s got more upside than the remaining 3B, and is more than worth the risk. He may not be valued this high in most fantasy baseball games, so make the most of the undervalued all star.
3. Adrian Beltre – Yep, I said it. The Rangers third baseman wasn’t a fluke last year, and will reward those who trust him. Don’t get me wrong, I like Hanley Ramirez and Joey Bats as much as the next guy, but when I look at them, I simply don’t see the fantasy performer I do in Beltre. The Rangers boast potentially the league’s best lineup, making nearly every at bat one with runners on base. The lineup protection will limit his downside on a week to week basis. It will also result in inflated counting numbers to go along with a superior batting average. Don’t count Beltre out after a monster 2011 campaign.
Bust: David Wright – The Mets aren’t a good baseball team, and that fact will present itself before long. They moved in the fences at Citi Field, but I’m not sipping the Kool-Aid quite yet. He was banged up last year (102 games played) and already has minor finger injuries early in this season. He’s off to a hot start, which will result in an overreaction in most fantasy baseball games. Third base is deep this year, and Wright isn’t worth the price tag in 2012.
Sleeper: Mike Moustakes – At 23 years of age, Moustakes embodies the Royals entire lineup. He is a young infielder who has as much potential as anybody in the league today. This is the year that the glorified farm system finally pays big league dividends, and KC finishes with a top 10 offense. A breakout season that includes 20 homers and 80 RBI is not out of the question, and as a borderline top 20 third basemen, that is a value that cannot be beat.
The year of the pitcher (part III) is well underway, but it’s possible the bats heat up as the mercury rises. Keep an eye on these four guys, and leave Wright for another owner.
Fantastic fantasy wishes,
Fantazzle Kyle
