Hello Fantazzlers,

The NBA Playoffs are shaping up, as six first-round series are now over, leaving just two series hanging in the balance. The Lakers and Nuggets will be playing the final game of their series this Saturday at 10:30PM ET, while the Clippers and Grizzlies play game six of their series tonight at 9PM ET.

While we wait and see how these two series shape up we know the 76ers will face Boston and the Pacers will face the Heat in round two. The 76ers were just the fifth number 8 seed to knockout their conference’s top dog in the history of the NBA. And while the Celtics seem to be as healthy as they’ve been in a while, this should be another great series. How can the NBA Playoffs get even more exciting you ask? This past week saw three new members inducted into the Hall of Fame and who are eligible for the end-of-year Fantasy Baseball Hall of Fame Freeroll. The biggest winner was deecee, who not only finished as the number one high scorer of the week but who also tied for the second highest season score (81) in our Fantasy Baseball Salary Cap games. The other two members inducted were tank7 (66) and wondertwins (64).

The non-steroid era will become better known as the era of pitching dominance. Seemingly everywhere you look, there are pitchers stringing together donuts on the scoreboard, leaving hitters baffled. Some fantasy baseball games don’t include pitchers, but for those that do, here is a quick glance at how the elite break down.

1. Justin Verlander – MVP and Cy Young awards talk for themselves, as Verlander is the best pitcher going right now. He strikes out more than a batter per inning, and seems to make every start a quality start. The addition of Miguel Cabrera should help his win total stabilize, and there is no reason to think that Verlander is going to give hitters more of a chance this year than last.

2. Clayton Kershaw – His team is not nearly as good as Verlander’s, but in 2011 Kershaw quietly put up comparable numbers. The Dodgers ace had two fewer K’s and a 0.12 edge in ERA. With the Dodgers smoking out of the gate, Kershaw’s value increases, as the early season surge gives owners reason to be optimistic that he can repeat his 21 wins from a season ago. Magic Johnson may own the Dodgers, but it is Kershaw who has been the magic behind their success.

3. Felix Hernandez – Maybe you were expecting a Phillie to make the list, but I’d prefer the Mariners ace. Sure, Seattle won’t score many runs, but that is the only aspect of King Felix’s stat line that lags. He is an elite innings eater who strikes out more than a batter per inning. His ERA will be in the low 3′s in a worst case scenario, and the potential is there for him to be dealt at the trade deadline. The Philadelphia studs are going to suffer from a similar lack of offense, so I prefer Hernandez to all 3 of them this season.

Sleeper: Matt Garza – Pitchers who strike out batters will always have the opportunity to succeed in fantasy baseball. The high strike total usually leads to pitching out of jams, with the lone downside being pitch count. I’ll take my chances on Garza building on a successful 2011, especially with Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder out of the NL Central.

Bust: Ian Kennedy – Last years 21-4 record was among the best winning percentages in the MLB, not to mention his microscopic 2.88 ERA. But there is no way the Diamondbacks leader can repeat those numbers, or resemble a staff ace for that matter. Arizona plays in a hitters ball park, and Kennedy has never been a part of success like 2011 before. Heading into the year, Kennedy had never recorded more wins than losses, and lowered his season best ERA by about 1 run. Kennedy is good, but he’s not the ace of your fantasy baseball staff this season.

Happy Wednesday Fantasy Faithful,

Today, I’ll take a look at what could be the most important position on your way to a fantasy baseball championship: outfield. No matter the league format, outfielders make up a higher percentage of your offense than any other position, making your decisions crucial, and a misstep potentially devastating.

1. Matt Kemp: When a player is as concerned about his fantasy stats, I’m buying in. In the off season, Kemp said he was aiming for a 50/50 season, and fantasy owners should rejoice at his confidence. Kemp has all of the ability in the world, and he seems ready to take over the fantasy world. He is a 5 tool player that has 0 holes in his game, and has the hunger you like to see from your top player. He’s trying to help the Dodgers win games, but he is well aware of his statistics, and will do the best he can do lead you in all fantasy baseball games.

2. Justin Upton: Another player who can do it all, Upton is still improving. He turns 25 years old this summer, and you need to look no further than Kemp for a player who began to realize his potential at the 25 year mark. Now, Kemp is in his own tier, but Upton is the next best option. It is very possible that Upton goes 30/30 and bats .300, numbers that won’t be replicated by any other player in the MLB.

3. Carlos Gonzalez: There isn’t a single tandem better than CarGo and Tulo, and protection like that is hard to find. Hitting in the thin air at Coors makes Gonzalez my pick for largest increase in HR total among the elite OF’s. In my opinion, he is the safest remaining option, and a near lock for a 2012 stat line along the lines of 100-35-100-30-.305. I like Upton’s upside a bit more, but the floor on CarGo is lower, making him a solid option to lead your outfield. His current price in salary cap games doesn’t do him justice, as he is worth every penny this season.

Bust: Ryan Braun – Relax, it’s not that I don’t think that the Hebrew Hammer can’t put up solid numbers this year. But the stars don’t really align in his favor with the loss of Fielder and the positive .. um .. negative PED test. The BrewCrew still has a strong lineup, but the presence of Fielder cannot be overstated. He may not have been using drugs, but the pressure will be a lot to handle, and the sign of any slump will certainly lead to speculation. He’s a solid option, but let somebody else pay for the risk that comes with him.

Sleeper: Brennan Boesch – The situation can have as much to do with a players success as anything, and that is my rational behind loving Boesch this season. Every body knows about the Tigers dynamic duo, and pitchers figure to underrate the other 7 batters in the lineup. Boesch will be hitting next to Fielder and Cabrera, and I expect his numbers to soar above projections more than either of them. Look for Boesch to be a part of many successful fantasy baseball teams this upcoming year.

Build your roster around a stud outfielder and watch one of these three players carry your squad. Don’t worry about the mid level options, as OF should be a position in which you reach for the elite, and wait for the underrated options to fill out your lineup.
