Weekly Fantasy Football Games Advice for Fantasy Football Week 2

Well, I think its a little early to draw any major conclusions from week 1 of the NFL season. Sure, there are a couple of things that stand out, but I’ll leave it to others to draw conclusions. I’ll also let them give you the more general talking points (I highly recommend Football.com to get general football info along with fantasy football info and Nova Fantasy Sports for fantasy football news). I’m going to focus on fantasy football Week 2 by sticking with my preseason football projections, taking a bit from NFL Week 1, and playing the fantasy football matchups for Week 2. With that, I hope I can throw in a few less obvious tidbits that can help you out with fantasy football in general and also help you set your lineups in Fantazzle’s weekly fantasy football games (you can try out Fantazzle for free with our free fantasy football games for cash prizes).

In no particular order:

Todd Heap (BAL TE) START – Heap looked impressive in Week 1 and it could be the sign of times to come. Remember, Baltimore’s 2nd year Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron helped make Antonio Gates…well Antonio Gates. Last year, this didn’t help AT ALL thanks to Heap not being 100% healthy, a rookie QB, and a O line that needed to develop. This created a blocking role for Heap, but now all of those things have changed in Heap’s favor. He is 100% healthy for the first time in a long time, his QB is no longer a rookie and the O line has gotten better and has been upgraded with the signing of Oher in the draft and Birk in free agency.

So thats the season outlook. Now for the weekly fantasy football outlook. Last time Heap played against SD, he had 4 reception for 60yds and a TD. Last week, SD gave up nearly 100 yards to Zach Miller. They gave up a TD to Heath Miller last year in the playoffs and a bunch of points to other TEs in 2008 regular season. They don’t defend well against TEs and that will continue this week. Todd Heap is a top 5 TE start this weekend.

Dwayne Bowe (WR KC) SIT – I like Dwayne Bowe a lot. I think he will prove this year he is a Tier 2 WR ranking him right in there with Jennings, R. White, S. Smith types. And behind R. Moss, Fitzgerald, and the two Johnson’s (Andre and Calvin). But I don’t like his match up this week against Oakland’s Asomugha. Last year, Asomugha held Bowe to 2/27 and 6/90. Yes, 6/90 is not bad, but that was the blip because KC was playing catch up all day. Prior years looked much more like the 2/27 stat line. Plus if you have Chris Chambers on your fantasy football team then you definitely noticed what Asomugha did to him: 0 receptions for 0 yards for 0 fantasy points. I’m starting a guy like Isaac Bruce or Patrick Crayton over Dwayne Bowe this week.

Michael Clayton (WR TB) START - I have never been a Michael Clayton fan. I thought his rookie year was an aberration and so far I have been proved right. That said, I’m likin’ his potential in 2009 and for NFL Week 2. For the season, Antonio Bryant had another setback this week and who knows what that means for his season. He has been gimpy all preseason and all indications are that he won’t be right all year. That could be major for Clayton. Imagine this scenario: Bryant is well enough to play, but not play at his 2008 level. That will put the #1 CB on Bryant in each game and give Clayton the chance to become the super secret #1 for TB. With TB having little chance of being good, they’ll be down in games and will have to throw. Byron Leftwich may not be an incredible QB, but he can throw the rock and he has always looked to make big plays (short passes are not his thing and what got him into trouble in Jacksonville). That all bodes very well for Clayton. We could easily see a return to former fantasy football glory with a ~1,000yd and 8 TD year.

For this weekend, Buffalo got absolutely torched by New England. Didn’t matter if you were the #1 or #2 WR, each got 12 receptions for over 100 yds and close to 100 yds, respectively. TB is not NE. We all know that, but I like Clayton’s stat line last week of 5/93yds and this defense to give him a look over this weekend. If you have better options, play them (it scares me a bit that this could be a close game between two bad teams meaning lots of Cadillac and Ward), but if you can spare a roster spot, I would consider Clayton and use him if your options are thin at WR or you play in a deeper league.

Kurt Warner (QB Cards) ~~~~ I seriously doubt you got a better option on your traditional fantasy football team, but for a Fantazzle weekly fantasy football game, I’m staying away from Warner. He looked really bad this past weekend and whats even scarier was that it was a home game where  Arizona and Warner usually dominate. I think he is a definite concern not only for this weekend, but for the season. Luckily if you drafted him or LT in your fantasy league, you can always start over again and play Fantazzle games. You won’t be stuck with a injury filled team the whole year. Ok, so thats a pretty blatant sales pitch, but definitely start looking for a backup if you own Warner. Not sure Leinart is the solution either. Who knows what he’ll do.

Aight, well good luck to you all. Talk soon.
